Salik electronic road toll gate spanning a multi-lane road in Dubai

    Dubai driving guide

Salik in Dubai for rental cars is straightforward once you understand how crossings are recorded and what your booking includes. Here is what to know before you collect the keys.

With Super Sport Car Rental, Dubai Salik road tolls are included. Parking charges, traffic fines and non-Salik toll systems are separate. [6]

    01 / The basics

    How does Salik work?

Salik is Dubai’s electronic road-toll system. A reader detects the activated tag on the windscreen as a vehicle passes a gate, and the crossing is charged to the linked account. There is no toll booth where you stop to pay cash. Continue normally within the road’s speed limit. [1]

For a rental, ask the company how the vehicle’s account is managed and how crossings are handled in your quotation. Do not buy another tag, remove the existing one or register the car to a personal account without the company’s instructions.

    02 / Know the tariff

Salik charges and timings in Dubai

The standard schedule below applies outside Ramadan. Salik introduced variable pricing on 31 January 2025. A later company disclosure, dated 22 May 2026, confirmed 5% VAT on toll tariffs from 1 June 2026. The final column includes that VAT. [2] [3] [4]

Day / period Dubai local time Base toll Including VAT
    Monday–Saturday · Peak 6:00–10:00 AM
    4:00–8:00 PM
    AED 6 AED 6.30
    Monday–Saturday · Off-peak 10:00 AM–4:00 PM
    8:00 PM–1:00 AM
    AED 4 AED 4.20
    Standard Sunday* 6:00 AM–1:00 AM AED 4 AED 4.20
    Daily · Overnight 1:00–6:00 AM AED 0 AED 0

*The standard Sunday arrangement excludes public holidays and events. Ramadan uses a different timetable. Check Salik’s live announcements for your travel date; a normal Sunday or overnight schedule should not be assumed during an exceptional period.

Public toll rates are different from your rental bill. These amounts explain what the toll system charges. Your agreed rental inclusions determine whether crossings are billed separately to you.

    What changes during Ramadan?

Salik’s published Ramadan schedule sets peak hours at 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, off-peak at 7:00–9:00 AM and 5:00 PM–2:00 AM, and free crossings at 2:00–7:00 AM. Confirm the announcement for the Ramadan in which you travel, including Sunday and event arrangements. [5]

    03 / Plan your route

    Where are Dubai’s Salik gates?

Salik’s published network comprises ten gates, including Business Bay Crossing and Al Safa South, which opened on 24 November 2024. You may encounter different gates depending on the road and direction selected by navigation. [3] [7]

    • 01 Al Barsha
    • 02 Al Garhoud Bridge
    • 03 Al Maktoum Bridge
    • 04 Al Mamzar North
    • 05 Al Mamzar South
    • 06 Al Safa North
    • 07 Al Safa South
    • 08 Airport Tunnel
    • 09 Business Bay Crossing
    • 10 Jebel Ali

    Open the official gate map

Do nearby gates always mean two charges?

Specific paired-gate rules apply. Salik documents a single charge for Al Safa North and South when passed in the same direction within one hour; its Al Mamzar documentation describes the corresponding North/South arrangement. Check the current rules rather than counting every visible gantry as a separate payable crossing. [3] [8]

For an airport-to-hotel journey, plan using the exact terminal and hotel entrance. A route to Palm Jumeirah is not automatically the same as one to Downtown or Dubai Marina. Road closures, traffic and your direction of travel can change the route, so a fixed gate count for “Dubai Airport to the hotel” would be misleading.

    04 / Your booking

Who pays Salik on a rental car?

Before paying for any rental, ask whether road tolls are included, billed per crossing or accompanied by a handling charge. Request the total and any applicable tax in writing. A company’s administrative fee, if charged, is distinct from Salik’s published tariff.

Super Sport includes Dubai Salik road tolls in the rental price. Read our rental FAQs and confirm your chosen car and booking details with our team. [6]

    A simple cost example

Imagine two separately chargeable standard peak crossings and two off-peak crossings. The public toll calculation is (2 × AED 6.30) + (2 × AED 4.20) = AED 21.00, including VAT. This is an illustration of toll-system costs, not an additional Super Sport charge or a quotation for a specific route.

If a charge on a rental invoice is unclear, ask for the crossing date, time, gate and vehicle details, together with the contractual basis for any additional fee. Compare the record with your agreed inclusions before treating the amount as correct.

    05 / Avoid confusion

Salik, parking and Abu Dhabi Darb are different

    Road tolls vs parking

A Salik-branded payment does not necessarily mean a road crossing. Salik technology also collects parking payments at participating locations, including Dubai Mall and Parkonic sites. A parking charge remains a parking charge, even if collected through the Salik account. [1]

    Dubai vs Abu Dhabi

Darb is Abu Dhabi’s separate road-toll system. Do not assume that a Dubai Salik inclusion covers Darb. Confirm the arrangements for any non-Salik crossings before an inter-emirate trip. [9] [6]

With Super Sport, parking and traffic fines are separate from included Dubai Salik road tolls. Always follow parking signs and site-specific payment instructions, including at malls, hotels and airports. [6]

    06 / Before you drive

    Your rental-car Salik checklist

    1. Confirm the inclusion. Ask specifically about Dubai road tolls, parking and other emirates.
    2. Leave the vehicle’s tag in place. Ask the handover representative if anything looks damaged or missing.
    3. Plan before setting off. Compare the journey time and toll settings while parked; do not make sudden changes near a gate.
    4. Keep your booking records. Retain your quotation and return confirmation if a transaction needs clarification later.
    5. Ask for help early. If a toll-related message or unexpected charge arrives, send the details to the rental company.

Navigation may offer a toll-avoidance option, but the alternative can take longer. Choose the route that suits the journey and drive safely. A toll gate is not an instruction to stop, reverse or make an abrupt lane change.

    07 / Questions answered

    Salik rental-car FAQs

Do I need my own Salik tag for a rental car?

Ask the rental company to explain the vehicle’s existing tag and account arrangements. Do not purchase or fit another tag, remove the existing tag or register the rental car yourself without its instructions.

Do I stop or pay cash at a Salik gate?

No. Salik records crossings electronically. Continue normally within the speed limit; there is no cash-payment booth at the gate.

How much is a standard Salik crossing including VAT?

Under the standard non-Ramadan schedule, a peak crossing is AED 6.30 and an off-peak crossing is AED 4.20 including 5% VAT. The standard overnight free period is 1:00–6:00 AM. Sunday, event and Ramadan arrangements must be checked for the travel date.

Are Salik road tolls included with Super Sport?

Yes. Dubai Salik road tolls are included in the rental price. Parking charges, traffic fines and non-Salik toll arrangements are separate.

Does included Salik cover Dubai Mall or airport parking?

No. Included Dubai Salik road tolls do not make parking free. A parking payment collected through a Salik account remains separate from a road-toll crossing.

Is every Sunday free of Salik charges?

No. During the standard non-Ramadan Sunday schedule, chargeable hours carry an AED 4 base toll, or AED 4.20 including VAT. The standard 1:00–6:00 AM period is free. Public holidays and events can have different arrangements.

Does Salik included mean Abu Dhabi Darb is included?

No. Darb is a separate system. Ask Super Sport to confirm how non-Salik crossings are handled for your booking before driving to Abu Dhabi.

Can I choose a route that avoids tolls?

You can review toll-avoidance options in navigation before departure, but compare the full journey time and follow the route safely. Never stop, reverse or change lanes abruptly to avoid a gate.
